Cultural Spaces ist ein rollendes nomadisches Installationsprojekt. Es begann 2015 in Den Haag mit einem Auftrag des Nutshuis, eine groß angelegte Installation durch das gesamte Gebäude zu schaffen. Leonie nahm sechs Orte in Den Haag auf, vom Hafen bis zur Grote Kerk, und schuf aus diesen Feldaufnahmen komplizierte Porträts, die jeweils in einem anderen Raum des Nutshuis installiert werden sollten. Diese Arbeiten wurden zum Limited Access Festival in Teheran und Isfahan eingeladen, wo sie das Material für die nächste Folge aufnahm. Die Collagen von Teheran und Isfahan reisten dann nach Indien zum Story of Space Festival, wo sie neues Material für die nächste Installation aufnahm, und so geht die Geschichte weiter… Abgesehen von den Residenzen, bei denen Leonie ihren Aufenthalt nutzte, um neues Material aufzunehmen, wurden die Stücke unter anderem im Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofîa in Madrid, im Immigration Museum in Melbourne und auf der Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Kerala gezeigt. Die Kompositionen wurden von Radiosendern auf der ganzen Welt gespielt und sind bei Musica Dispersa, Biodiversitá Records und Noise à Noise Label erschienen. Die Tonbandfassung von Tehrsfahan wurde in der British Library archiviert.
Die letzte Station, die Cultural Spaces besuchte, war Shiraz. Und anstatt weiterzureisen, hat die Pandemie alles zum Stillstand gebracht. Das Jahr 2023 erlaubt uns einen Neuanfang, und die magischen Klänge von Shiraz werden endlich zu einem Installationsstück komponiert, das im August in den Räumen der Zwitschermaschine uraufgeführt wird. Teheran und Isfahan werden sich ihnen anschließen, um ein noch umfassenderes Klangerlebnis zu ermöglichen.
…und…welche Klänge wird Leonie in Berlin finden, und wohin werden sie reisen?
Leonie Roessler fängt ihre Umwelt durch Feldaufnahmen ein, die sie für für Radiostücke, Klanginstallationen und Kompositionen für Solisten und Ensembles verwendet. Sie war Artist in Residence bei der New Media Society und Limited Access Festival (Iran), Forum Wallis (Schweiz) und The Story of Space Festival (Indien) und der Berlin Circus Biennale (Deutschland), und Altes Finanzamt (Deutschland). Sie leitet den Radiozweig von Studio LOOS in Den Haag und ist Koproduzentin des iranischen Musiklabels Noise à Noise zusammen mit Soheil Soheili. Ihre Musik wurde aufgeführt/installiert in Australien, Belgien, Finnland, Frankreich, Deutschland, Indien, Iran, Japan, den Niederlanden, Schottland, Spanien, der Schweiz, dem Vereinigten Königreich und den USA aufgeführt. Leonies Radiowerke wurden auf zahlreichen Sendern und bei Kunstradio-Festivals ausgestrahlt und ihre Kompositionen wurden u.a. bei Antilounge, Musica Dispersa (Spanien/UK), Syrphe (DE), Biodiversità (IT) und Noise á Noise (IR) veröffentlicht und in der British Library physisch archiviert. Dieses Jahr war ihre Installation Kalpit’s Kitchen auf der Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Indien, ihre Installation Isfahan im Immigration Museum in Melbourne, und ihr Nomadenprojekt Cultural Spaces wird endlich fortgesetzt, nachdem es während der Pandemie aufgehalten wurde.
Aufgewachsen im Ruhrgebiet, zog Leonie als Teenager nach Los Angeles. Sie studierte klassische Gitarre am Los Angeles City College und erhielt 2010 einen Bachelor-Abschluss in Komposition mit einem Nebenfach Tanzperformance an der California State University Northridge.
Anschließend zog sie in die Niederlande und erwarb 2013 ihren Master in Komposition am Königlichen Konservatorium Den Haag, wo sie bei Peter Adriaansz und Calliope Tsoupaki. studierte. Anschließend absolvierte sie einen einjährigen Kurs am Institute of Sonology, wo sie sich auf Field Recording und die Verräumlichung von Klang konzentrierte. 2016 beendete sie das vierte und letzte Jahr des „Contemporary Music Through Non-Western Techniques“-Programms am Konservatorium von Amsterdam mit Rafael Reina als ihrem Lehrer.
Cultural Spaces – Shiraz – Tehran – Isfahan
Cultural Spaces is a roll-over nomad installation project. Is started in 2015 in The Hague with a commission from the Nutshuis to create a large-scale installation through the entire building. Leonie recorded six places in The Hague, from the harbour to the Grote Kerk, and created intricate portraits out of these field recordings, each to be installed in a different room of the Nutshuis. These pieces were invited to Limited Access Festival in Tehran and Isfahan, where she recorded the material for the next instalment. The collage works of Tehran and Isfahan then traveled to India to the Story of Space Festival, where she recorded new material for the next installation, and so the story goes… Apart from the residencies during which Leonie used her stay to record new material, the pieces have been displayed among other places at the Museo National Centro de Arte Reina Sofîa in Madrid, the Immigration Museum in Melbourne, and the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in Kerala. The compositions have been played on radio stations world-wide, and have been released through Musica Dispersa, Biodiversitá Records, and Noise à Noise Label. The tape-edition of Tehrsfahan has been physically archived in the British Library.
The last station that Cultural Spaces visited was Shiraz. And rather than traveling on the pandemic hit and brought everything to a screeching halt. 2023 is allowing us a fresh start, and the magical sounds of Shiraz are finally being composed into an installation piece that will be premiered at the iconic Zwitschermaschine this August. Tehran and Isfahan will join them for a more complete sonic experience.
…and…what kind of sounds will Leonie find in Berlin, and where will they travel to?
Leonie Roessler captures her environment through field recordings, which she uses for radio pieces, sound installations, and compositions for soloists and ensembles. She was artist in residence at New Media Society and Limited Access Festival (Iran), Forum Wallis (Switzerland), and The Story of Space Festival (India), and Berlin Circus Biennale (Germany), and Altes Finanzamt (Germany). She runs the radio branch of Studio LOOS in The Hague and is a co-producer of Iranian Music Label Noise à Noise along with Soheil Soheili. Her music has been performed/installed in Australia, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, India, Iran, Japan, the Netherlands, Scotland, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA. Leonie’s radio works have been broadcast on all numerous stations and in art radio festivals and her compositions have been released, among others, through Antilounge, Musica Dispersa (Spain/UK), Syrphe (DE), Biodiversità (IT) and Noise á Noise (IR) and have been physically archived in the British Library. This year her installation Kalpit’s Kitchen could be heard at the Kochi-Muziris Biennale in India, her installation piece Isfahan at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne, and her nomad project Cultural Spaces will finally continue after having been stopped dead in its tracks during the pandemic.
Raised in the Ruhr District (Ruhrgebiet) in Germany, Leonie relocated to Los Angeles as a teenager. She studied classical guitar at Los Angeles City College, and received a Bachelor Degree in Composition along with a Minor in Dance Performance at California State University Northridge in 2010. She then moved to the Netherlands and earned her Master’s Degree in Composition at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in 2013, where she studied with Peter Adriaansz and Calliope Tsoupaki. She then completed a one-year course at the Institute of Sonology, where she focused on Field Recording and the Spatialization of Sound. In 2016 she finished the fourth and last year of the Contemporary Music Through Non-Western Techniques Program at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Rafael Reina as her principal teacher.
