Mit der menschlichen Entwicklung entwickeln sich auch die Geräusche, die im Zusammenhang mit ihr stehen, insbesondere durch die fortschreitende technische Entwicklung. Auch die Stimmen der Menschen können Jahrzehnte versetzt anders klingen. Das ist bei Tieren ggf. nicht der Fall. Oder vielleicht doch? Der Film des Lebens hat einen Soundtrack. Er lässt sich in eigener Regie vertonen, individuell und überlappend. Was wäre wenn alle Geräusche gleichzeitig nebeneinander her zu hören sind, unabhängig von zeit- und räumlichen Gegebenheiten und alles gleichlaut. Abstrakt und utopisch. Wie würden Menschen das verarbeiten? Könnte man so leben? Wahrscheinlich ja.

Mit der Performance-Installation „Sounds for the Tape Amateur“ arbeitet Matthias Mayer an der Schnittstelle von Bildender Kunst und Musik. Mit Hilfe analoger Technik aus den 1980er Jahren in Form von zahlreichen Tapedecks und analogen Mischpulten baut er Installationen, die Sounds in Szene setzen. Kakophonien entstehen auf Basis gleichzeitig abgespielter geloopter Geräusch-Samples. Sie werden zu experimentellen Kompositionen – intuitiv gemischt und im besten Sinne Anti-Musik.

Matthias Mayer ist Künstler, Kurator und Ausstellungsmacher seit Anfang der 1990er Jahre. Sein künstlerisches Werk ist ausgehend von der Malerei über Skulptur, Installation, Video, Fotografie und Performance sehr vielfältig. Er hat international gearbeitet und ausgestellt, u.a. als Stipendiat im ISP (International Studio Program) in New York, USA (1996/1997). Er erhielt einige Projektförderungen u.a. von der Berliner Kulturverwaltung für das Ausstellungsprojekt „Let the Rhythm Hit ‚Em“ im Kunstraum Kreuzberg/ Bethanien (2011) und die Ausstellungsserie „Changes on the fly“ (2017) zu räumlichen Veränderungsprozessen in Berlin. Seit 2003 betreibt er den Projektraum Spor Klübü in Berlin-Wedding. Hierfür wurde er mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Matthias Mayer‘s Fokus liegt auf der Interaktion von Musik und Bildender Kunst in Form von Performance-Installationen. Hier tritt er auch mit dem Pseudonym DJ Sporty Jack auf – sowohl als Bildender Künstler, Musiker und DJ.

As humans evolve, so do the sounds associated with them, particularly as a result of advancing technological development. Human voices can also sound different decades later. This may not be the case with animals. Or maybe it is? The movie of life has a soundtrack. It can be set to its own soundtrack, individually and overlapping. What if all sounds could be heard at the same time, side by side, independent of time and space and all at the same volume? Abstract and utopian. How would people process this? Could we live like that? Probably yes.

With the performance installation „Sounds for the Tape Amateur“, Matthias Mayer works at the interface between visual art and music. Using analog technology from the 1980s in the form of numerous tape decks and analog mixing consoles, he builds installations that stage sounds. Cacophonies are created on the basis of simultaneously played looped noise samples. They become experimental compositions – intuitively mixed and anti-music in the best sense of the word.

Matthias Mayer has been an artist, curator and exhibition organizer since the early 1990s. His artistic work is very diverse, ranging from painting to sculpture, installation, video, photography and performance. He has worked and exhibited internationally, including as a fellow in the ISP (International Studio Program) in New York, USA (1996/1997). He has received several project grants, including from the Berlin Department of Culture for the exhibition project „Let the Rhythm Hit ‚Em“ at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/ Bethanien (2011) and the exhibition series „Changes on the fly“ (2017) on spatial change processes in Berlin. He has been running the Spor Klübü project space in Berlin-Wedding since 2003. He has received several awards for his work. Matthias Mayer’s focus is on the interaction of music and visual art in the form of performance installations. He also performs under the pseudonym DJ Sporty Jack – as a visual artist, musician and DJ.
